Welcome to the Stewarts in Ireland Web Site.

Introduction to this web site

The Web Site has been created as a result of research into the family of John Stewart of Hortland Co. Kildare Ireland (by the Administrator) who came to Ireland C.1820 to work for Sir William Hort of Hortland (formally know as Sculloguestown) Co Kildare Ireland.

During my research a large amount of information was gathered from a variety of both public and private sources. By placing all of this information on the Web, I am hopeful it will save other Stewarts and researchers a lot of time in visiting all of the various locations where information has been stored.

Given the amount of information still becoming available the site will continue to be upgraded. This will be on going.

An Overview of Ireland Records

Records were kept in the 17-18th century by the established church (Church of Ireland) on behalf of the Crown (British Empire) and were placed in the former Records Office in the Four Courts in Dublin.
Records were frequently destroyed on the orders of the authorities of the time, however, at the beginning of the 1st World War, England was short of paper and with such a vast quantity of paper ie census returns etc, they (the English) took a huge quantity of this paper, pulped it and created new paper for their own use.

The Civil War

In 1922, during the Civil War the Records Office in the Four Courts in Dublin was bombed and badly burnt resulting in most of the records that were left, being damaged beyond use.
The result is that many records in Ireland are missing.
One can get Baptism records from 1864, Marriages and Death Certificates from approx 1924-8.
Some Church of Ireland Birth, Marriage and Death records are available from the RCB in Dublin and some are available from the National Archives Dublin.
See list of contacts on contacts page for details.

During the late 1800's, it is said that their was over 11,000 Stewarts living in Ireland. So I have a lot of research to do to track down the names and addresses and input them into this web site.

If you have any information that could be of use to other viewers or researchers or if you are related to the Stewarts of Hortland, Fawcetts of Counties Kildare and Monaghan, The Muldrew and Sinton familys from County Armagh and County Down, please Email me at georgevstewart@gmail.com

Where other researchers work is copied, the names of the contributors or sites are listed.

Please note that the use of the Coat of Arms on the top of each page is one of a number of Coats of Arms that were granted to various Stewart families by the Crown of England. The only families of today who are entitled to use such Coats of Arms must be a direct decendant of the original family to which the Coat of Arms was granted to. The editors family cannot or do not claim any such Coats of Arms, as so far no proof of this can be found.

A quotation from the hand of Diogenes

The lantern in the hand of Diogenes, I now realize that i'm living in an age where the concealment of truths has been elevated to an art as well as a science.
Truths that always used to be allowed to emerge as a matter of course are nowadays being kept secret.
Without a lantern in ones hand, it is practically impossible to find somebody one is looking for.
Cold gust of winds extinguish the lantern flame, one has a choice, let it stay out, or light it again, and carry on looking for people. End of quote.
I intend to keep the lantern burning bright and to carry on looking through other sources and records to add as much information on the Stewarts in Ireland as is possible to access.
